Diving into Local History

This half term, Year 3 at Newhall Junior School have been learning about their local area in history. Their key question has been, ‘Why should we preserve our locality?’

The topic began with a walk around the local area. Pupils visited two listed buildings and looked closely at what made them special. This helped them start thinking about why some buildings are protected.

In school, pupils were visited by The Magic Attic. They explained what a listed building is and why it is important to protect them. Pupils also learned about features such as columns and weather vanes, helping them spot details they may not have noticed before.

To continue their learning, Year 3 also visited Calke Abbey. During the visit, pupils saw rooms that had been restored and others that had been left as they were. This helped them understand the difference preservation can make. They also learned about how people lived in the past and explored the building, including a tour of the underground tunnels.

Year 3 showed great interest throughout the topic. The mix of learning in school and visits helped them understand why looking after our local area matters.
