Inspiring the athletes of the future
Sporting fever gripped Newhall Junior School in June as we welcomed not one, but two amazing Team GB athletes – Oliver Hynd MBE and Georgina Forde-Wells – as part of National School Sports Week. The visit began with a brilliant whole-school assembly. Oliver, a Paralympic gold medallist, shared his inspiring story of how he overcame a muscle condition to become a champion swimmer. Georgina, who is just starting out in her athletics career, spoke about her hopes for the future and what it takes to follow your dreams.
The children were fascinated by their stories—especially when Oliver showed one of his real Paralympic medals! There were gasps of amazement and lots of wide eyes as the medal was passed around.
Both athletes talked about the challenges they’ve faced and how they’ve stayed strong, determined, and focused. They linked their journeys to our school’s 6Rs, encouraging everyone to show resilience, respect and responsibility in everything they do.
After the assembly, it was time to head outside into the sunshine. One class at a time, pupils joined the athletes for a fun and active PE session. After a quick warm-up, the children took part in exciting relay races that tested their speed, teamwork and energy. There was lots of cheering, laughter and encouragement all around.
It was a fantastic day and we’re so grateful to Oliver and Georgina for visiting us and showing our pupils what’s possible with hard work and a positive attitude.
It’s a day we’ll all remember for a long time!
