Newhall marks Black History Month with inspiring learning
Throughout October, our pupils took part in a range of activities to recognise and celebrate Black History Month. Each year group explored the lives of influential Black figures, learning about their achievements and the impact they’ve had on history and society. The children reflected on what they had learned through creative tasks, including artwork and written responses.
Year 3 pupils learned about Rosa Parks and her brave decision to stand up to racial segregation in 1950s America. Year 4 focused on Barack Obama, exploring his journey to becoming the first African-American president of the United States.
In Year 5, children studied the life of Katherine Johnson, a pioneering mathematician whose work at NASA helped shape space exploration. Meanwhile, Year 6 discovered the story of Walter Tull, a trailblazer in both sport and the military.
Theses lessons offered valuable opportunities for pupils to deepen their understanding of black history and celebrate the contributions of those who have helped shape the world we live in today.
